Preparing the Ground for a Wildflower Garden

Volunteers from Perth Grammar School help prepare the wildlife garden

Creating new habitats takes patience, teamwork and more than a little hard work.

Pupils from Perth Grammar School's ISP programme recently returned to Green Shoots to continue work on a new wildflower area within the grounds. Before any seeds could be sown, there was plenty of preparation to do.

The group spent the session weeding, raking, composting and carefully preparing the ground, learning first-hand that successful environmental projects often begin long before the flowers appear. As anyone who gardens knows, nature rarely follows a timetable, and keeping on top of weeds proved to be an important part of the process.

There were no shortcuts. The pupils spent the morning weeding, spreading compost, raking and levelling the ground until it was finally ready for planting. Sometimes the less glamorous jobs are the most important ones, and this was definitely a team effort.

Partnerships with local schools form an important part of Green Shoots' work. Outdoor learning gives young people the chance to try new things, work together and play a real part in developing the site.

A special thank you goes to Ingrid for sharing her knowledge and guidance throughout the project.

With the groundwork complete, the area is now ready for sowing. We look forward to seeing the wildflower garden develop over the coming months and the benefits it will bring for both wildlife and visitors.
